The Big Three, 3*1000m – Coomloughra Horseshoe, Kerry The Coomloughra Horseshoe is a classic Kerry ridge walk that takes in Ireland’s three highest peaks: Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh, and Caher. This challenging route rewards hikers with dramatic ridges, steep climbs, and sweeping panoramic views across the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and the surrounding lakes and valleys, offering a true summit‑to‑summit mountain experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT LEVEL: Difficult to Strenuous TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY: Scrambling Level 2 DISTANCE: 16 km ASCEND: 1350 m TIME: 8-9 h The hike takes you through open, untamed terrain, blending sections of farm paths and mountain trails with vast stretches of untouched wilderness. Expect to encounter rocky outcrops, boulder fields, loose scree, wet and muddy patches, trickling streams, grassy slopes, and dense heather. This is no gentle stroll—prepare for steep ascents and descents, including thrilling scrambles where you’ll need to use your hands to conquer rugged sections. It's an adventure that promises both challenge and raw, wild beauty.
